What it is

One job, done properly, for one letter.

Debt letters look scary and often are not. Some are genuine, some are not, some are trying to get you to restart a clock that has already run out. Telling the difference on your own is hard.

The Letter Check covers one letter, whether it came from a creditor, a debt collector, a solicitor, a council, or a court:

  1. What the letter is

The legal name for the letter (Default Notice, Notice of Assignment, Letter Before Action, claim form, and so on) and what the sender is trying to get you to do.

  2. Is it genuine

Whether the sender is who they say they are, whether the debt they name is one the law lets them chase, and whether anything on the letter is wrong or missing.

  3. Is the debt yours to pay

Whether the debt is inside its enforcement window, whether it is statute barred under section 5 of the Limitation Act 1980, whether the sender has the paperwork the law needs them to have to prove it.

  4. What to send back

A complete written reply drafted for you to sign and send in your own name, as the account holder. You are free to send it as drafted, adapt it to your circumstances, take parts of it and leave others, or not send it at all. You own the decision. The letter goes from you, not from The Real Debt Guy.

  5. Anything urgent

If the letter is a court claim, a warrant, or a pre-action deadline, the reply spells out exactly how many days you have and what happens if you miss the date.

One page. In writing. Yours to keep.

Why £19

Not the words. The judgement.

There are chatbots that will draft a response to a debt letter for free. The catch is judgement.

A confident-sounding wrong answer on statute barred, part payment, or the Pre-Action Protocol costs a lot more than £19. Restarting a six-year limitation clock by making a small "goodwill" payment is a mistake a chatbot will happily walk you into. So is ignoring a claim form for the two weeks it takes to enter a default judgment against you.

The Letter Check is £19 because that is what one focused piece of debt-experienced judgement on one letter costs. Not the words. The judgement.

How it works

Three steps, from letter to reply.

  1. Pay

£19 by card. You get a Letter Check reference number by email.

  2. Upload

You go straight to a short form. Photo of the letter (phone camera is fine), name of the sender, one line if there is anything else that would help. Add each page as a separate file, or upload one multi-page PDF. Up to six page files, plenty for a Default Notice or a court claim. One letter means one sender (one creditor, one debt collector, one court). If you have several letters from different senders, Letter Audit at £99 covers up to four.

  3. Get your reply

One page, plain English, in your inbox within 48 hours. Often faster.

What you need to sendA clear photo or PDF of the full letter, front and back. Every page. Nothing else.

What you do not need to sendBank statements, credit report, other letters, ID. This is one letter, one reply.

Bigger than one letter

If yours is bigger than one letter, the £19 comes off.

Some cases are bigger than one letter. If yours is, the £19 you paid for the Letter Check comes off the price of the next step.

Letter Audit · £99

Up to four letters, one written Letter Review and Action Plan, one round of clarifying questions, within two working days. £19 credit if you move up to a Letter Audit within 30 days.

What it is not

To keep the price and the promise honest.

  • Not FCA regulated advice

The Real Debt Guy is not authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority to give regulated debt counselling or debt adjusting. What you get is written information based on the letter you send and public UK law and rulebook citations.

  • Not a letter sent on your behalf

The written reply is drafted for you to sign and send in your own name, as the account holder. Nothing goes out under The Real Debt Guy letterhead. You are free to send it as drafted, adapt it to your circumstances, take parts of it and leave others, or not send it at all. You own the decision.

  • Not a recommendation on which debt solution to enter

If your case involves a specific decision on entering a debt solution (Debt Relief Order, Individual Voluntary Arrangement, Bankruptcy, Debt Management Plan), the Letter Check will not recommend one. It will identify what type of decision the letter is asking you to make.

  • Not a full case review

Four letters or more, or a court claim already filed with several papers attached, is Letter Audit or Full Support territory.

  • Not a phone call

For a ten minute phone conversation to talk a route through, book a Clarity Call (£27.50).

  • Not a template pack

You get one complete written reply, matched to your letter, not a folder of blanks to figure out yourself.

FAQ

Common questions.

Can I not just ask a chatbot?

You can. The risk is judgement, not words. A chatbot will confidently give you a wrong answer on statute barred debt, part payment restarting the six-year clock, or a Pre-Action Protocol deadline. It will not know whether the letter you received is a genuine chase, a template scare, or a court claim on the fourteen-day cliff. £19 buys you the judgement of a debt-experienced human on one letter. If you already know the debt law well enough to check the chatbot's work, you probably do not need a Letter Check.

What kind of letters does a Letter Check cover?

Any single letter about a debt in your name. That includes a Default Notice from an original lender, a Notice of Assignment from a debt buyer, a chase letter from a debt collector, a Letter Before Action from a solicitor, a council tax reminder or summons, a DVLA or HMRC arrears letter, a utilities arrears letter, and a court claim form. If your letter is something a Letter Check cannot cover, you get a full refund.

How do I send you the letter?

After you pay, you go straight to a short form. Take a clear photo of every page with your phone (front and back), then add each page to the form as a separate file. Up to six page files, which is plenty for a Default Notice or a court claim. If you already have a scan, one multi-page PDF is even quicker. All of it counts as one letter, so long as it is from the same sender: one creditor, one debt collector, or one court.

How long does it take?

Within 48 hours, often faster. You get an email confirming your Letter Check reference the moment you upload, and the written reply lands in the same inbox.

What if my letter arrived in the post today with a deadline this week?

Send it in. If the deadline is tight the reply gets prioritised. If the deadline has already passed, the reply will say so and tell you what to do next.

Whose name goes on the reply, and do I have to send it word for word?

Yours, and no. The written reply is drafted for you to sign and send in your own name, as the account holder. Nothing goes out under The Real Debt Guy letterhead. You are free to send it as drafted, adapt it to your circumstances, take parts of it and leave others, or not send it at all. You own the decision.

Do I have to redact my account number and address?

Please remove anything you do not want a third party to see. The account number and reference are usually helpful to keep visible, because they confirm the letter is genuinely about you. Your name and postal address on the letter are fine to leave in.

Can I send more than one letter?

Letter Check is one letter for £19. If you have four or fewer, Letter Audit at £99 is the right size (and your £19 comes off if you move up within 30 days). If you have a whole file, Full Support is the right size.

Is my letter safe with you?

Yes. Letters are stored on a UK Microsoft 365 tenant behind two factor authentication, only used to write your reply, and deleted on your request after the reply has been sent.

What if the reply tells me to do something I do not want to do?

You are always free to ignore it. The reply is written information based on the letter and UK law, not an instruction. Nothing gets sent on your behalf.

Do you offer refunds?

If the letter you uploaded is not something a Letter Check can cover (for example, it is a whole creditor pack, not one letter), you get a full refund and the option to move to Letter Audit or Full Support instead. Refunds are processed within 5 working days back to the card that paid.
