Credit runs quietly through almost every part of life in the UK. Most people never learn how any of it works, until something goes wrong.
Every household in England and Wales sits inside the same credit system. The current account, the overdraft, the phone contract, the buy-now-pay-later click at the checkout, the car finance agreement, the mortgage. Every one of them is a credit agreement, with rules written down in statute and rulebook, and consequences that follow a set order if things go wrong. Almost nobody is taught any of this.
Understanding Your Debts is a plain English book about that system. It is for anyone who uses credit in England and Wales, whether the first agreement has just been signed, everything is running smoothly, or a letter has arrived that does not make sense. Reading it before a problem arrives is the point.
What the book covers
- What credit is, how a lender decides to give it to you, and what the credit reference agencies actually see
- The overdraft, the buy-now-pay-later account, the store card at the till, and the phone contract in your pocket, treated as the credit agreements they are
- Car finance, joint agreements, and the moment a signature makes two people liable
- The month-by-month story of a debt going wrong, from the first missed payment to the letter from a company you have never heard of
- The county court, the CCJ, and the enforcement agent, in the order the paperwork actually arrives
- Statute barred debt, and the letter that ends the chase
- The four formal solutions in England and Wales, Debt Management Plan, Debt Relief Order, Individual Voluntary Arrangement, and Bankruptcy, with the trade-offs of each
Written for the household, not the industry
The book quotes the statutes and rulebook sections that actually matter, in the words they were written in, and then translates them into language a household can act on. Where the paperwork uses a technical term, the book explains it once, properly. Where a letter is designed to sound worse than it is, the book takes it apart. Where a route through is genuinely limited, the book says so.
What the book is not
This is not a get-out-of-debt scheme. It does not promise write-offs. It does not pretend the Consumer Credit Act contains a magic clause that cancels a debt. It does not recommend any single formal solution over another. Where a paid support option exists in the UK, the book points to Citizens Advice as the free, independent starting point, and explains what a household can do on its own before spending money on anything.
Who it is for
- Anyone starting out with credit for the first time, from a first bank account to a first phone contract
- Anyone new to the UK who wants to understand how credit, letters, and the courts work here before signing anything
- Anyone with a mortgage, a credit card, a car agreement, or a buy-now-pay-later account who wants to know how the paperwork they signed actually works
- Parents and older relatives who want to hand their children or grandchildren something clear before they take on credit of their own
- Anyone who has just received a letter, a default notice, a CCJ, or a bailiff visit, and needs to understand it fast
- Anyone weighing up a DMP, a DRO, an IVA, or bankruptcy and wanting the trade-offs in one place
Understanding Your Debts is the first book in the Real Debt Guy series. It is written to be read once, then kept on a shelf, so the next question about credit, a letter, or a court form has a clear answer waiting.
